Sir John Beaufort 1371-1410
An illegitimate son of John of Gaunt, Sir John was made Earl, Marquess and Knight of the Garter by King Richard II whom he served as Constable of Dover Castle, Warden of the Cinque Ports and Admiral of the Fleet. King Henry IV confirmed his legitimation for all purposes except succession to the Crown and appointed him Chamberlain of England. He was buried in Canterbury Cathedral.
